There’s a very small brewing device making big waves in the coffee industry with its recent release, but it’s not only due to its incredibly portable design. The Trinity Zero Coffee Press is small enough to slip into your pocket, but is a part of something bigger: a move towards sustainable manufacturing and minimal environmental impact. Oh, and it makes a quality coffee, too.

The Trinity Zero is the latest brewing device from Mark Folker and the team at Trinity Coffee Co., and is the smallest brewer of its kind in the industry, standing at 65mm high and weighing in at only 113 grams. Not only is it extremely portable due to its size, but the Zero is also one of the simplest brewers around, with only three parts and one brew method which allows you to have your favourite cup of coffee ready for you to enjoy in about 60 seconds.

The Zero is made up of the lid, the water chamber, and the coffee basket. In-built into the lid is the pump, which is repeatedly pressed down during the extraction to create pressure within the water chamber. Under the lid sits the 100ml capacity water chamber which includes a silicone dispersion screen and a handy indicator line on the chamber wall so you don’t over-fill the chamber with water. Underneath is the coffee basket which screws into the bottom of the water chamber and holds approximately 18 grams of medium/fine ground coffee. The basket has a 150-micron stainless steel filter on the bottom which is permanently moulded inside the BPA-free polypropylene basket.

Each piece of the Zero brewer is recyclable and involves no single-use components such as paper filters. This environmentalist design is quite intentional from the team at Trinity Coffee, who as part of the company’s #TowardsZero campaign, are making every effort to minimise their environmental impact while maintaining excellence and quality in their brewing products.

So, how does it brew? The Zero has been described by Folker as a “hybrid” brewer, that sits somewhere between espresso and drip and produces a strong coffee concentrate that still boasts clarity in the cup. According to Folker, its TDS is around 4% (total dissolved solids – the actual amount of coffee that is in your brew) whereas espresso generally sits between 8-12% and filter sits between 1.2-1.5%.  This unique not-quite-espresso-not-quite-filter brew is created by the diaphragm pump mechanism which creates enough pressure in both the water chamber and the filter basket for the 60-second extraction. The whole brewing process is simple and fast:

  1. Add 18g of medium/fine coffee grounds to the coffee basket.
  2. Screw the basket on to the water chamber and place the brewer on top of your cup.
  3. Add 100ml of boiling water to the water chamber (fill to the indicator line).
  4. Let it sit for about 30 seconds to pre-infuse.
  5. Add the lid to the water chamber, making sure it’s nice and secure.
  6. Push down on the pump on the lid with your thumb. This will begin forcing water through the coffee bed. Hold the pump down for a second or two at a time before pumping again. You should have a nice, steady stream of coffee being extracted from the filter basket with each press.
  7. Within about a minute, your coffee should be ready to enjoy.
